Cultural Resource Review and Reconnaissance Survey for the Fairmeadows RV Storage and Gravel Mining Pit
Project, Greeley, Weld County, Colorado
1
f
Figure 9. Site 5WL9410, Feature 1, house, view to the southwest.
Although the house is on a property owned by a Union Colonist and early Greeley settler Joel Edwin
Davis,he acquired the property later in life as an investment rather than it being directly tied to the
family's historical prominence in the region. The property has remained investment/rental property ever
since. The house does not present significant or masterful architectural elements of design or materials.
The house has had incongruous changes and additions made, including additions that distort its shape and
mass, replacement window openings, and changes to the siding and entry openings. The property lacks
significance and integrity under any NRHP criteria.
5WL9411 — 1515 East 8th Street
SWCA newly recorded 5WL9411,a historic farmstead at 1515 East 8th Street, consisting of a house
(Feature 1)and garage(Feature 2).The house is wood-framed and on an irregular footprint.Based on
Weld County records, the house was built in 1938,the same year as the house at 1519 East 8th Street
(5WL9412),which is consistent with its construction style(Figures 10 and 11). Overall, the building has
had additions through time, including a shed roof extension of the back(north)and a shed-roofed entry
room on the northeast corner. The main, original house has a cross-gabled roof, and the original footprint
would have been T-shaped.The eaves are enclosed, with no rafters exposed.Roof shingles are new gray
asphalt tiles.Like the house discussed previously(1507 East 8th Street/5WL9410), it is apparent from
Weld County Assessor photographs from 2001 that earlier horizontal wood siding on this house has been
replaced. The window openings have been refit with smaller aluminum-framed windows and the front
door has been refit with a non-period door. The foundation is concrete as are the porches.
Feature 2 is a concrete block garage that sits northeast of the house(see Figures 10 and 11).The garage
has a double door(plywood)single entry in its south end.The Weld County Assessor photograph from
2001 shows this building as having a metal roll-up garage door. Several extensions have been added to
the rear of this shed-roofed building, which has a corrugated sheet-steel roof. The yard of the house is
fenced with low chain link fencing that connects from the garage to the house.
12
