• Shrub Density and Height <br />Total shrub density averaged 4.1/10 m2 or 1635 plants per acre. <br />Five plants were present in the density quadrats. Shadscale is followed <br />in dominance 12.6 plants/10 m21 by obovate leaf saltbush, black greasewood, <br />snakeweed, and big sagebrush. See Table 8. <br />Black greasewood, the tallest shrub, had an average height of <br />72.3 cm. Obovateleaf saltbush, with an average height of 22.6 cm, was the <br />lowest in height. Big sagebrush had an average height of 40.0 cm, snake- <br />weed an average height of 32.4 cm, and shadscale an average height of <br />28.7 cm. See Table 8. <br />3.2.3 Greasewood/Shadscale Study Area <br />This study area is located in the eastern part of Section 28, <br />T105, R98W, north and east of The refuse disposal. This area is rectan- <br />gular in shape and encompasses approximately 22 acres. The topography of <br />the site includes south and west exposures as well as flat terrain along <br />Coal Creek which drains and flows through the site. Elevations range from <br />4840 feet to 5000 feet. <br />This study area will provide a reclamation success standard <br />for the Cameo No. 1 Mine and the refuse disposal disturbances. <br />• Cover <br />Total vegetation cover for the area averaged 44.2 percent. <br />Rock, litter, and soil cover were all moderate at 20.7, 18.7, and 16.4 <br />percent, respectively. Absolute cover by life form was as follows: shrubs, 6.0 <br />percent; succulents, 0.7 percent; perennial grasses, 0.5 percent; annual <br />grasses, 18.5 percent; perennial forbs, 0.2 percent; annual forbs, 17.7 <br />percent; and cryptogams, 0.6 percent. See Table 9. <br />Shrubs provide 14 percent of the total vegetation cover. <br />Black greasewood was followed in dominance by shadscale and horsebrush, Annual <br />forbs and annual grasses accounted for 82 percent of the total vegetation cover. <br />Cheatgrass, with a cover of 18.5 percent, alone accounts for 42 percent of <br />the Total vegetation cover. Dc•minant annual forbs include: redstem filaree, <br />African mustard hla,Lcv.lmia a~icicorta, and common blue mustard, al I introduced <br />weedy species. Prickly pear cactus Opurt,tia pv.Lyacan,tha and hedgehog cactus <br />~chirtvice~ceu~ #~,ig,Cvchidia•#ua conspicuously contributed 0.7 percent of the <br />vegetation cover. See Table 8 for other minor species present. <br />Production <br />Total herbaceous production of the fifty-two 1 m2 clipped plots <br />ranged from a low of 0.0 g/m2 to a high of 50.2 g/m and averaged 15.9 <br />g/m2 or 142.0 Ibs/ac. See Table 10. Grasses accounted for 42 percent of <br />• the total production. Cheatgrass, with a production of 6.7 g/m2, and <br />'redstem filaree, a weedy forb with a production of 4.9 g/m2, together <br />accounted for 73 percent of the total production. The rest of the biomass <br />was contributed by forbs and few perennial grasses. <br />-10- <br />
