• Black greasewood with an average height of 116.5 cm was the
tallest shrub. Rubber rabbitbrush had an average height of 88.3 cm. See
Table 4.
Tree Data
A total of 9 cottonwood trees were present within the southern
portion of the study area. They ranged in height from 3 m to 20 m and had
a DBFi range of 5 cm to 88 cm. There were 10 stumps of variable size and
no new reproduction. See Table 5.
3.2.2 Shadscale Shrubland Study Area
This study area is located in the central portion of Section
26, T105, R98W east and south of the Roadside Mine. The approximately
24 acre site is shaped like two intersecting rectangles. The topography
has steep slopes to the west and north and ranges in elevation from 4800
feet to 5400 feet.
This Shadscale Shrubland will be used to establish reclamation
standards for the Roadside Mine.disturbances and part of the refuse disposal
area.
Cover
• Totat vegetation cover in the Shadscale Shrubland averages
38.4 percent. Rock cover is very high at 30.7 percent while soil and
litter cover are both moderate at 14.1 percent and 16.8 percent, respec-
tively. Absolute cover by life farm is as follows: trees; 0.7 percent; shrubs,
5.9 percent; perennial grasses, 1.3 percent; annual grasses, 27.4 percent;
perennial fortis, 0.7 percent; annual (orbs, 2.6 percent; and cryptogams,
0.3 percent. See Table 6.
Shrubs provide just over 15 percent of the vegetation cover in this study
~ area. Shadscale is followed in dominance (4.Z percent cover) by obovate-
leaf saltbush A.t2ip(ex cf. vbvvvta and spiny horsebrush ie.ticadymi¢ ~pi~v~a.
Cheatgrass, a weedy annual with a cover of 27.4 percent, accounts for 71
percent of the total vegetation cover. Galleta is an important native
perennial grass with a cover of 0.7 percent. Two annual introduced weedy
plants, redstem filaree ficvdium ciCU#vaium and tumblemustard, represent
the major forb cover. Numerous other species present within the Shadscale
Shrubland but having a low cover are listed in Table 6.
l
Production
The herbaceous production of fifty 1 m2 plots ranged from a
low of 3.3 g/m2 to a high of 45.3 g/m2 but averaged 18.4 g/m2 or 164.4
._ Ibs/ac. Cheatgrass accounted for 65 percent of the total production.
Perennial grasses important in the production data include Salina wildrye
. Ei~mu~ ~o,L(rcu~ and galleta. Fortis had a total production of 4.7 g/m2.
~ See Table 7.
-9-
a
