Introduction
This groundwater quality monitoring plan will be implemented at the Delta Paving Gravel Pit
located in Delta County, just south of Orchard City, Colorado. This plan outlines the methods
that the mine operator, Grand Junction Pipe & Supply Co., will follow to protect and monitor the
integrity of the region's groundwater quality. This plan is intended to meet the requirements of
the Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety (DRMS) Mineral Rules and Regulations Rule
3.1.7(7)(b) and the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) Regulation
No. 41. The Delta Paving site is not located on any classified areas regarding groundwater;
therefore, the statewide regulations (CDPHE Regulation 41) will be followed.
This monitoring plan requires the collection of pre-operational groundwater quality data that will
be used as the baseline data to compare to the results of continued long-term groundwater
quality monitoring. As mining has already taken place on site, and Phase 1 and 2 of mining
were permitted prior to the implementation of this plan, this monitoring plan will only apply to the
Phase 3 and Phase 4 operations. Prior to opening Phases 3 and 4 of mining, pre-operational
groundwater quality data will be taken. At least five quarters of monitoring data will be collected
prior to disturbance in Phases 3 &4. Continued monitoring will take place during Phase 3 and 4
operations. Results of this monitoring will be used to evaluate if any adverse impacts on
groundwater quality have taken place as a result of the Delta Paving gravel mining operations.
The monitoring plan is discussed in more detail below.
Groundwater Quality Monitoring Plan
The goal of this groundwater quality monitoring plan is to define the baseline groundwater
quality conditions and collect long-term groundwater quality data during mining of Phases 3 and
4 at the Delta Paving Gravel Pit. The long-term quality data will be compared to the baseline
conditions of the site to determine if gravel mining operations have created any impact to the
regional groundwater quality.
1 . Sampling Methods
This section defines the locations and type of groundwater sampling that will take place at the
Delta Paving Gravel Pit. Baseline sampling will take place prior to the beginning of Phase 3 and
4 mining, and will continue while these areas are being mined.
1 .1 . Sampling Location
Groundwater will be sampled at one location, GW-1, on the Delta Paving Gravel Pit. The
location of GW-1 will be on the northwest corner of the Phase 3 and 4 mining area as shown in
Delta Paving Gravel Pit
Groundwater Monitoring Plan G-2- 1 © Lewieki 81 Associates
September 2022
