Park Ave. Montrose, CO 81401
RE: Thompson Pit
Dear Mr. Quigley,
Thank you for the opportunity to provide input on the proposed Thompson Pit in Montrose County,
located approximately 2.2 miles west of the town of Olathe. This letter is in response to your request
for comments on April 27r", 2022.
One of our Goals at Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is to provide complete and timely information to
all entities who request comment on matters within our statutory authority and our mission, which is to
perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide
enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future
generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.
District Wildlife Manager (DWM) Natalie Renneker performed a site visit of the proposed project site on
April 27t", 2022. The property is approximately 121.1 acres, comprised of a mix of cropland and
rangeland, with a small spring running through the center of the property. DWM Renneker observed
signs that the property is being used by a variety of wildlife species, but did not observe any signs of
raptors or species of special concern on the property. There is a small spring, which Buckhorn
Engineering has already identified as "Wildlife Habitat" and does not plan to develop this area
(approximately 39.9 acres). Buckhorn Engineering has also consulted with NRCS on appropriate native
seed mixes for the eventual reclamation of the property. and Mr. Quigley and DWM Renneker also
discussed the removal of existing woven-wire livestock fencing on the property to reduce hazards to
wildlife.
Currently, CPW policy directs our efforts towards proposals that will potentially have high impacts to
wildlife and wildlife habitat. with an emphasis on large acreages, high priority habitats, wildlife
diversity, and effects to species of special concern. At this time, impacts of the development, as
proposed, may be characterized as minimal. This does not mean that the landscape has no value to
wildlife. and CPW applauds the efforts that Buckhorn Engineering has already taken and considered to
mitigate impacts to wildlife.
Again, CPW appreciates the opportunity to comment on this project during the planning phase. If you
have any questions, please contact DWM Natalie Renneker at (970) 209-2371 or via email at
natatie.renneker@state.co.us.
Sincerely,
11AV—
Natalie Renneker, District Wildlife Manager
I 9
Da i Prerzlo .reC'or rni^; ^rake end"idhfe•Parks an'Nrr!dnfe Conrrsson .Mann^UcDan,el,Char•Carne Resnette-ia aer,V,ce-Chao v '-'- " ,
Manr'-la;kett.>rcrrtan,•Tnrhya,A,i?m7 • ,ctsv 11rcl-a•Charles Ga-aa•Mlas Mav•Dukc PhWips,IV•Luke Schafer•Jav Ttrchton•Eden Vardy
