Recorder’s Management Recommendations: The site is a series of waste rock piles and is not eligible for the
NRHP. I do no recommend that any management or protection measures be implemented. As long as railroad
improvement activities are kept within the existing right-of-way, the site will not be affected.
16. Known Collections, Reports, or Interviews: None.
17. Site Description/Update: This site consists of a series of waste rock piles from the Sopris Coal Mine. I relocated
and briefly investigated the site as part of an improvement project for the railroad that transects the site. I found the site
as previously described in 1985 and 1992. I confirmed that there are no features or artifacts within the right-of-way for
the railroad, and, as such, railroad improvement activities within the right-of-way will have no impact on the site. It was
outside the purview of the project or my authority to fully document the site outside the right-of-way, so I did not collect
a new boundary or other data apart from photographs. The existing boundary appears to be accurate.
The site was recommended previously as not eligible for listing on the NRHP. I concur with this recommendation. While
the site is generally associated with an important event in the region's history (i.e., mining), it is an unimportant
component—the waste rock piles—of the Sopris Mine and will not contribute in a meaningful way to our understanding
of mining in the region. It is therefore not eligible under Criterion A. The site was worked and operated by many people
during the years of its operation. There is no evidence that the waste rock piles are associated with anyone of
significance to the region's history, and the site is therefore not eligible under Criterion B. The site does not contain any
unique features, artistic merit, or any potential to yield data significant to the history of mining in the region; it is
therefore not eligible under Criteria C or D. Finally, because the site is not eligible under any criteria, a discussion of the
seven aspects of integrity is not warranted.
18.
