Owner(s) Name and Address: Most of site is within Trinidad Lake State Park.
8. Was the site relocated? Yes No If no, why? (100% collected in previous recording, ground disturbance,
etc.)
9. Previous recordings: This site is a large previously recorded coal mine just south of Trinidad Lake. The mine was
first recorded in 1985 by an unnamed person who recommended the site not eligible for listing on the NRHP. In 1985,
the site was described as a series of seven waste rock piles associated with the Sopris Mine. The Colorado & Wyoming
Railroad is the only major feature—other than the seven waste rock piles—that appears on the original 1985 map.
Waste rock piles 1–3 are depicted north of the railroad and the other piles (4 through 7) are depicted south of the
railroad. As no other artifacts or features are mentioned in the site record from 1985, we can only assume that nothing
other than the waste rock piles was observed at the time.
The site was revisited in 1992 by Martha Poley of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division. She says little about
the site and instead mostly confirms what was said in 1985; that the site is a series of waste rock piles from the Sopris
Coal Mine and that it is not eligible for the NRHP.
10. Most recent National Register Eligibility Assessment: Eligible Not Eligible Need Data
Explain: No explanation is provided on the 1985 or 1992 site records.
11. Listed on Register: National State None
Date Listed:
12. Condition (describe): The site entire site is heavily overgrown with vegetation to the point that the waste rock
piles all appear as natural slopes and hills. However, despite the vegetation growth, there is no reason to assume that
the piles are not well preserved and in excellent condition.
