New Elk Mine Bridge Repair and Replacement Project
arcadis.com
New Elk Mine Cultural Report_TB_Rev030722 NOT FOR PUBLIC DISCLOSURE 14
4 RESULTS
Arcadis completed the survey for this Project on December 10, 2021. Arcadis documented 17 previously
recorded archaeological and above-ground resources that at least partially intersect the ROW, as well as
31 newly recorded above-ground resources associated with the former C&W (5LA.7112) (Table 2). Of the
17 previously recorded resources, Arcadis fully documented 11 previously recorded resources (5LA.5913,
5LA.7112. 5LA.7112.1, 5LA.7112.14, 5LA.7112.15, 5LA.7112.16, 5LA.7112.21, 5LA.7112.22,
5LA.7112.23, 5LA.7112.24, and 5LA.9878) and provided cursory updates for the six remaining previously
recorded resources (5LA.1099, 5LA.1211, 5LA.1452, 5LA.1472, 5LA.1522, and 5LA.2202). Three sites
(5LA.1452, 5LA.1472, and 5LA.1522) were confirmed to have been destroyed when the railroad was
rerouted around the south side of Trinidad Lake. Another three sites (5LA.1099, 5LA.1211, and
5LA.2202) were inspected to ensure that no artifacts or features fell within the ROW; this was confirmed
to be the case.
All 31 newly recorded above-ground resources, as well as eight previously recorded resources, are
associated with the former C&W Railroad (5LA.7112), which was previously recorded and determined
eligible for NRHP listing as a linear resource. Eight features and segments associated with 5LA.7112 are
previously recorded according to the previous numbering and documentation system. These include four
bridges (5LA.7112.1, 5LA.7112.14, 5LA.7112.15, and 5LA.7112.16) and four segments of the railroad
grade (5LA.7112.21, 5LA.7112.22, 5LA.7112.23, and 5LA.7112.24). The C&W (5LA.7112) and each of its
previously recorded features were determined eligible for NRHP listing, though it is not clear if the
features were found individually eligible or only eligible as contributing elements of the C&W Railroad
linear resource. As a result of field survey, Arcadis surveyed the entire C&W railroad grade (5LA.7112,
including .21, .22, .23, and .24) and the four previously recorded features (5LA.7112.1, .14, .15, and .16),
as well as 31 new features located within and associated with the C&W railroad grade (5LA.14414
through 5LA.14444). One additional resource, the former C&W Railroad Segundo Depot (5LA.5913), is
also associated with 5LA.7112 and within the ROW, but unlike the other features, is not a physical part of
the C&W railroad grade.
Arcadis collected new Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the 11 previously recorded and 31
newly recorded sites that were fully documented (Appendix A). Arcadis has prepared OAHP documents,
maps, and photographs for these sites as well (Appendix B). For the other six sites (5LA.1099, 5LA.1211,
5LA.1452, 5LA.1472, 5LA.1522, and 5LA.2202), Arcadis has prepared OAHP revisitation forms and
photographs that summarize the condition of these sites in December 2021 (Appendix B). New GIS data
were not collected for the other six sites, as it was either not possible (due to the sites having been
destroyed) or outside the purview of this Project to fully investigate and document the portions of sites
outside the ROW.
This is a synopsis of how the results of the survey align with Arcadis’ four research goals:
1. Goal: To fully document and thereby create one cohesive record for 5LA.7112 (C&W railroad
grade) and all its associated features (i.e., culverts and through-truss bridges).
a. Result: Success; 5LA.7112 and its 35 associated features were documented.
2. Research Goal: To relocate and document two other sites that were likely to still exist within the
ROW: 5LA.5913 (C&W Railroad Depot) and 5LA.9878 (Martinez and Medina Ditch).
a. Result: Success; both sites were relocated and documented.
