August 23, 2022 C-1981-012/New Elk Mine JLE
DWDA pile showed signs of greater sedimentation that previously observed by the Division. The region has
experienced a significant amount of consistent precipitation recently. NECC has created a large sump on the
southeast corner of DWDA 42 upstream of culvert C13. This sump was holding a significant amount of sediment
and should be cleaned out and the berm separating the DWDA 42 piles from the Middle Fork of the Purgatoire
River needs to be built up. Willows have established in the sump which is also limiting the capacity of the sump.
Ditch D 14 on the south end of the pile should also be cleaned out and reestablished. Given the proximity to the
river,NECC should make the upkeep and maintenance of the sediment control structures around the
DWDA#2 pile a priority to protect the hydrologic balance.
i
i
Figure 1.
