The mix is to be seeded at 15 lbs./acre drill seeding. If a seed drill cannot be used,
then the mix should be seeded at 25 lbs. per acre broadcast seeding or 35 lbs./acre hydroseeding. The
seed should be planted no more than '/4 inch deep. A seed drill with different seed boxes especially
one for fluffy seed is recommended so that the Blue Grama is properly planted. The first method of
seeding will be Broadcast Seeding. The subgrade will be disced prior to seeding. The other seeding
methods are listed and will be used in trouble areas if the broadcast seeding is not successful. The mulch
that will be used will be straw applied at 2 tons per acre.
Irrigation: Irrigation is not necessary for establishment; however, it does shorten
the establishment period, and may be needed if plantings fail. The grasses can be established
within a growing season with proper irrigation. Without irrigation establishment should take 3 years
with normal or above normal precipitation. Without irrigation and no drought, the grass cover
should be close to baseline coverage in 5 years.
Weed control: The reclaimed area shall be maintained in compliance with the Chaffee
County Noxious Weed Management Plan and Colorado Noxious Weed Act. Annual weeds,
Kochia (Bassia scoparia), Russian Thistle (Salsola spp) Tumblemustard (Sisymbrium altissimum) and
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) should be mowed right before seed set to reduce spread or controlled
with herbicides early in the growing season. Kochia and cheatgrass should be controlled to prevent
takeover of the site. Weed growth is to be expected during the first year and should be monitored. There
will be native weeds that do not present long term problems and should be allowed to grow and replenish
their seed banks. All noxious weeds as well as the above annual weeds should be controlled through
mowing and/or herbicides and affected areas replanted afterwards. Weeds will always exist on site since
wind deposited seed cannot be prevented, however, weed cover should not exceed 15% of total plant
cover after the establishment period.
Milestones: Vegetative cover should be within 5-10% of the baseline cover by year 5. If
this goal has not been met, then the site should be overseeded with the Permanent Seed Mix.
Vegetative cover in years 1-4 will depend on precipitation. Monitoring the vegetation should occur at
least once a growing season so that problems can be addressed in a timely manner.
Prepared by:
Alex Tonnesen
Western Native Seed
PO Box 188
Coaldale CO 81222
