South Hinsdale Response to Objections
12 July 2022
Claims:
(1) Claim: people that want this gravel pit don't even live here See Section 5.11.9. There
are many people, including ranchers and business owners as well as residents (both year-
round and seasonal) who understand the need for material which this project can produce
at an affordable price and while reducing environmental impacts.
Objections:
(1) Objection: viewshed—will totally destroy our view of our mountains See Section 5.4.2.
(2) Objection: traffic— hundreds of trucks per day See Section 5.3. it may be possible that
this commenter was confusing this project with some other project. To require even 100
movements (50 round trips) at 20 tons/vehicle would mean hauling 1,000 tons per day,
and this is not possible with the size and layout of the site. And 50 round trips in a 10-hour
day is 5 trips per hour, or one every six minutes passing a given point(coming and going)
(3) Objection: road conditions — horribly maintained See Section 5.3
(4) Objection: noise—will destroy the environment See Section 5.7
(5) Objection: dust—will destroy the environment See Section 5.8
3.25 Caleb Tibedeau
List of two (2) objections. *also commented on 24 May 2022 (item 3.36)
(1) Objection: viewshed — impact on Piedra River Trail and Ice Caves Trail, climbing area
"giant hole where it used to be gorgeous, pristine, and peaceful" See Section 5.4.2. Please
note that the "giant hole" will be a relatively small bench cut into the west end of the
Dancing Winds Ranch, in a ridge which rises from approximately 7658 to 7733 feet (96
feet) in 700 feet at an average 7H:1 V slope. The height of the cut into the ridge will not be
close to the 96 feet because of the estimated dip and strike of the underlying shale, which
is not suitable for construction materials. The floor of the pit itself will slope upwards to the
east, with the cut depth (measured from the original surface to the floor, reaching a
maximum of 20-40 feet. The final slope, per State requirements, will be about 3H:1 V on
the south and east sides, or a maximum (assuming we are wrong about shale depths) 96
feet rise in 300 feet. (This would be significantly flatter than the existing slope on the north
face of the spur along which Kleckner Lane drops to Piedra Road (40 feet in 90 feet, or
approximately 2H:1 V). See also photos in Appendix A.3.
(2) Objection: road conditions —washboarded [sic] mess See Section 5.3
3.26 Gary Simms
Owns land on Taylor Lane?
List of one (1) suggestion, two (2) claims, and six (6)objections.
Suggestions:
(1) Suggestion: there are better places See Section 5.1
Claims:
(1) Claim: Piedra River designated as a Wild and Scenic River While some sources claim
the river is under consideration for such designation, we are unable to find any such
designation in official records. Based on general knowledge of the requirements for
5182-22-003 WASTELINE, INC. Page 48 of 107
