2. The chute shall be of metal or metal-lined wood and the different
portions shall be set on approximately the same slope, which shall be
• not less than one vertical to three horizontal nor more than one
vertical to two horizontal.
3. The discharge end of the chute shall be provided with a baffle to
prevent segregation.
4. If the height of the discharge end of the chute is more than three
times the thickness of the layer being deposited but not more than
five feet above the surface of the concrete in the forms, a spout shall
be used and the lower end maintained as near the surface of deposit
as practicable.
5. All waste material and the flushing water shall be discharged outside
of the forms.
G. Consolidation
1. Concrete shall be thoroughly consolidated during and immediately
following placement in the forms.
2. Consolidation shall be accomplished by mechanical vibration subject
to the following provisions:
_ a. The vibration shall be internal to the concrete, but not applied
directly to reinforcement or formwork, unless special author-
. ization of such methods is given by the Engineer or provided
herein.
- b. Vibrators shall be of a type and design approved by the Engi-
neer.
c. The intensity of vibration shall be such as to affect visibly a
mass of concrete of one-inch slump over a radius of at least 18
inches.
d. The Contractor shall provide a sufficient number of vibrators
to consolidate properly each batch immediately after it is
placed in the forms.
e. Vibrators shall be manipulated so as to work the concrete
thoroughly around reinforcement and embedded fixtures and
into the corners and angles of the forms.
Vibration shall be applied at the point of deposit and in the
. area of the freshly deposited concrete. The vibrators shall be
inserted and withdrawn from the concrete slowly. The
vibration shall be of sufficient duration and intensity to con-
solidate the concrete thoroughly, but shall not be continued so
as to cause segregation. Vibration shell not be continued at
any one point to the extent that localized areas of grout are
• formed. Application of vibrators shall be at points uniformly
spaced and not farther apart than twice the radius over which
the vibration is visibly effective.
03300-9
