Introduction
The Base Products Gravel Pit is located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Montrose, CO in
Montrose County at an elevation of 5300 feet. The Base Products Gravel Pit#1 was acquired
by BDF, L.L.C. in October 2016 and is currently operated by Doug Flowers. The Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety granted Base Products Gravel Pit#1 a 112 construction
materials permit in 1994 for the purpose of mining gravel from property owned by Tony F.
Appelhanz. The initial permit covered an area of 13.5 acres with only about 10 acres of mining
area. In 2000, Tony Appelhanz gained an amendment to the existing permit which allowed the
mining of an additional 41.9 acres on the Base Products Gravel Pit#1 property. An additional
amendment obtained in 2018 granted the applicant an additional 80.6 acres to the permit area.
The total permit area of the Base Products Gravel Pit#1 as of March 2022 is 136 acres.
This application serves to separate the most recently added permit area under its own 112
construction materials permit. It totals approximately 73.8 acres which will be deemed the Base
Products Gravel Pit#2. The mining and reclamation plans for this property are not changed
from the plans provided in the 2018 amendment.
Base Products Gravel Pit 2
April 2022 Lewicki&Associates
