o Transport contaminated soils to the Whirlwind Waste Dump storage area <br /> for temporary storage until a permanent disposal site is determined. <br /> • Flammable Materials (No Fire) <br /> PPE: Work clothes; rubber gloves; and rubber boots (chemical cartridge air-purifying <br /> respirator if available) <br /> Response: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Secure area. <br /> o Rescue& First Aid, if necessary& possible. <br /> o Remove ignition sources <br /> o Locate fire extinguisher and keep near at hand. <br /> o Dam or dike to contain material. <br /> o Watch for flammable or explosive vapors. <br /> o Coat surface of spilled liquid with dry chemical extinguishing agent, if <br /> enough is available. Save enough extinguishing agent for firefighting. <br /> o Do not add water. <br /> Remediation: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Do not add water. <br /> o Pick up liquids if proper equipment is available, or absorb spilled materials <br /> with compatible material ifliquid retrieval is not possible. <br /> o Transport contaminated soils to the Whirlwind Waste Dump storage area <br /> for temporary storage until an appropriate permanent disposal method and <br /> site is determined. <br /> • Flammable Materials (Fire) <br /> PPE: Work clothes; self-contained breathing apparatus (alternatively, no respirator <br /> or full-face respirator for small fires that can be quickly knocked down); eye <br /> protection; gloves; and boots (rubber is best) <br /> Response: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Secure area. <br /> o De-energize electrical equipment. <br /> o Rescue& First Aid, if necessary& possible. <br /> o For small fire use available dry-chemical fire extinguishers to knock down <br /> the fire as quickly as possible. Avoid water for small fires, if possible. <br /> o Keep area well ventilated. <br /> o For a large fire, protect adjacent structures, use water from a safe distance. <br /> o Remember water can be used as a barrier. <br /> o Direct extinguishing agent in a manner to avoid splashing spilled material. <br /> 89 <br />
