unwarranted risk to responders,to eliminate ongoing leak or spill sources prior to <br /> beginning operations. <br /> • Corrosives (No Fire) <br /> PPE: Chemical splash protection; respirator required;face-shield; rubber gloves; and <br /> rubber boots. <br /> Response: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Secure area. <br /> o Rescue& First Aid, if necessary& possible. <br /> o Dam or dike ahead of the spill; heavy equipment is available for <br /> earthmoving. <br /> o Cleanup with water is allowed; contain all runoff, excavate an emergency <br /> catch basin, if possible. <br /> Remediation: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Absorb spilled materials, if possible, with earth or other suitable material. <br /> o Transport contaminated soils to the Revenue waste pile storage area for <br /> temporary storage until a permanent disposal site is determined. <br /> • Corrosives (fire) <br /> PPE: Full-coverage acid suit; self-contained breathing apparatus (alternately full- <br /> face respirator with combination cartridges for very small fires that can be quickly <br /> knocked down);face-shield; rubber gloves and boots. <br /> Response: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Secure area. <br /> o All electrical equipment must be de-energized. <br /> o Rescue& First Aid, if necessary& possible. <br /> o For a small fire use available dry-chemical fire extinguishers to knock down <br /> the fire. Do not use water. <br /> o For large fire, concentrate on protecting adjacent structures and slowly <br /> flood area with water from a safe distance. <br /> o Direct extinguishing agent in a manner to avoid splashing spilled material. <br /> o Dam and dike at a safe distance to control runoff, excavate an emergency <br /> catch basin, if possible. <br /> o Perform overhaul, if spilled material can be avoided. <br /> Remediation: <br /> o Evaluate situation. <br /> o Certify fire was extinguished. <br /> o Absorb spilled materials, if possible, with earth or other suitable material. <br /> 88 <br />
