2.2 Seeps, Springs, and Precipitation
There are no known seeps or springs located within the NS Sodium Lease boundary, or in the
surface projection area of the cone of depression for existing and proposed water supply wells.
NS will monitor precipitation and collect data with at least one weather station on the sodium
lease area.
2.3 Stream Gauging Stations
NS, through a cooperative agreement with the USGS, provides funding via Rio Blanco County
for the operation of four stream gauging stations. Stations are located upstream and
downstream of the NS operation on the Piceance and Yellow Creeks. Figure 4 illustrates the
locations of the stations. USGS personnel collect stream flow data and water quality samples
for periodic analyses. The samples are analyzed for the chemical parameters that are listed in
Table 2.
The gauging stations have an extensive historical database consisting of more than twenty-five
years of data collection. Natural or artificial control devices are utilized to facilitate water level
readings acquired with a continuous level recording unit.
If the water quality deviates significantly from historical baseline conditions, sampling
frequency may increase as directed by the BLM. NS will propose monitoring changes if
variations are detected in water quality or flows that are not a result of natural fluctuations, but
variations that are directly attributed to NS mining operations. NS has seen no impact to any
surface water systems in over 29 years of operation.
Daub&Associates, Inc. Page 9 Natural Soda LLC 2022 EMP
