2.1.4 Groundwater Quality
All groundwater monitor wells will be sampled pursuant to the NS Sampling Analysis Plan (SAP).
Field data (pH, temperature and conductivity) and other observations will be recorded during
each sampling event. Sampled groundwater is analyzed for constituents, which are
characterized into major and minor groupings. A list of the major and minor constituents is
provided in Table 1.
The analytical lists may be updated as deemed necessary by any of the three regulatory
agencies. For monitor wells located outside the well field (remote monitor wells), sampling will
continue for a minimum of three years after project cessation. Sampling frequency of remote
monitor wells will be conducted on an annual basis. NS will submit a request to discontinue
sampling for in-field wells no sooner than three (3) years after cessation of mining within the
area that is being monitored.
2.1.5 Water Monitoring Plan
NS personnel or their contractors will typically draw groundwater samples using dedicated
samplers from approved completion zones. Dedicated water quality monitoring wells will be
equipped with a nitrogen gas-lift type well sampling device or be sampled with a wireline
deployed, discrete zone sampler. Other EPA approved sampling methods may be utilized. The
sampling methods are discussed in detail in the NS SAP.
2.1.6 Production Well Fluid Sampling
All injection fluids will be sampled pursuant to the NS SAP and on a quarterly basis. Field data
(pH, temperature, and conductivity) and other observations will be recorded during each
sampling event. The individual recovery flow lines from each solution mining interval shall be
equipped with sampling ports to facilitate collection of samples for specific gravity, pH, total
dissolved solids (mg/L), specific conductivity, as well as major and minor analytes listed in the
SAP. A list of the major and minor constituents is provided in Table 1.
2.1.7 Monitoring/Reporting Contingency Plan
The monitoring frequency may be increased to at least once-per-month if recorded values
indicate that the monitored zones have been affected by the mining operations. Field
measurements may be taken and the samples may be analyzed for major constituents. The
first sample may include minor constituents.
Daub&Associates, Inc.
