4. Water Handling
No water diversions will be needed at any part of the mining operation. Water will be used in
processing and dust control and will be purchased and brought on site by an independent operator.
Water will be stored in the wash ponds located in the southern portion of the processing area. Area
surface water will be allowed to drain within the site, since the size of excavation will be
substantially bigger than the volume of runoff the local area will generate. A two-foot-tall stormwater
berm will be constructed along the boundary between the neighboring pit to be mined through so no
water from the site will be discharged. The berm will be removed during reclamation. This berm can
be seen in Map C-2.
The Uncompahgre River and floodplain to the northeast and are greater than 130 feet lower in
elevation than the Spring Creek Pit so disturbances to the surface water systems will not occur.
