Mining Methods and Slope Stability Evaluation for Expanded Development of the Walstrum Aggregate Quarry_
Avg.
Foliation
E Strike=1270
Slope is stable N
because walls 1:1 Overall
cut across foliation Slope
planes 40 ft
40ft
Avg.
Foliation
Dip 480
Scale: As shown
Figure 4.3 —East Wall Configuration and Orientation of Foliation Planes
4.3 Rainwater and Snowmelt Drainage
In areas where natural or existing drainage is insufficient, to prevent undue water saturation and
pressure in rock slopes, systems that prevent rainwater and snowmelt from flowing over rock
slopes should be built. These systems might include drainage ditches, collection sumps and pipes
to transfer water to desired down-slope drainage or treatment locations.
4.4 Blasting Controls
Poor blast design and execution can cause damage to rock slopes. Excessive vibration, poor
burden relief, and improper bench geometry will influence the stability of rock slopes. As noted in
the recently approved blast plan, AFS plans to use non-electric initiators that provide one-hole-
per-delay blast sequencing. This practice should be continued. Furthermore, it would be wise to
limit the diameter of explosive charges to 6.5 inches.
REVEY Associates,Inc. Page 10 of 14 October,2001
