would also require additional BLM permits(the road crosses public land)which Zephyr has not secured.A
secondary concern of mine is the dust created by continuous use of mining haul trucks on Temple Canyon
Road.Zephyr states that fugitive dust from the road will be controlled as necessary with water applied by a
water truck equipped with spray bars. I'd like to know who will make the decision on what is"necessary"?
Where will the water come from, and who will pay for that water? If Fremont County supplies the water, and the
water is funded by taxpayer dollars, is this in the best interest of all citizens of our county?
Another apprehension shared by many local residents living adjacent to the proposed mining activity involves
explosives and blasting.Zephyr has stated that around 13,000 pounds of explosives will be used for up to a
week of blasting activity. All of this blasting activity will occur within a mile of the Dawson Ranch subdivision,
and much closer to full-time residences immediately adjacent to Zephyr's property along Temple Canyon Road.
All of this begs the question...is this proposed mining activity in the best interest of the residents of Fremont
County,as well as the wildlife and habitat surrounding Zephyr's proposed mining site?
Zephyr's multiple water requirements are of particular concern to both myself and many other local residents.
It's been stated that during mining operations, the proposed mine will require over 178,000 gallons of water per
day.As we all know, water is Colorado's most precious commodity, and during a drought that has lasted nearly
two decades,we simply cannot afford to waste local water which most certainly will be drawn from the
Arkansas River. The Arkansas River is a major source of water for our community in Canon City, but it's also an
important resource for local outdoor recreation which includes fishing and whitewater rafting.
The list of grave concerns goes on and on.As a professional fly fishing guide who operates guide trips in
Temple Canyon, the Grape Creek State Wildlife Area, and the Lower Grape Creek Wilderness Study Area, I
know firsthand that any mining activity by Zephyr,or any other exploratory or actual mining company, will have
very long-lasting detrimental effects on the landscape, fish, and wildlife in the greater Grape Creek drainage.
You don't have to look far to see the scars left by previous and non-productive mining activity from decades
past. Our county is covered with mining scars...when do we say enough is enough?
Again, I urge the DRMS to consider all the facts and public input regarding Zephyr's application.Their plan is
the wrong mine, in the wrong place, and it most certainly does not represent what's best for our local
community and for the landscape surrounding Canon City.
Sincerely,
Paul A.Vertrees
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M122112211 or C123456789.
M2021046
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
Permit Type
Hard Rock
County
Fremont
Enter one county only
Site Name
Dawson Gold Mine
Perm ittee/Operator Name
Zephyr Gold USA Ltd
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
