6/30/2021 Aspen Fire Protection District:2021-00800
NARRATIVE (3)
Narrative Title: 615 Narrative
Narrative Author: Spaulding,Jake
Narrative Date: 05/21/2021 08:44:38
Narrative Apparatus ID: n/a
Narrative:
Paged to the above address for structure fire.I responded in engine 63 as it was at station 62. Engine 62 was in the shops.
While we were en route 601 arrived on scene and assumed command. I recall hearing about a 6,000 gallon fuel tank was
involved or next to the fire.On scene 601 advised us to drive past the incident to hit a hydrant. We passed the scene
looking for a hydrant.Once I realized that we had drove longer than we had supply line we turned around. Face to face
with 601 we decided to hit the fire with a master stream in a defensive mode. The fire was burning in a container that had
two generators and fuel inside of it.This container was in close proximity to the 6,000 gallon fuel tank(<than 15). Engine
63 was placed and the master stream was set up and we began flowing water on the fuel tank to cool it down.We were
effective in cooling the tank and also knocking down a portion of the fire.At that time I worked with FF Edelson on
developing strategy and tactics to attack the fire.Crews used two 1 3/4"hand lines to knock down the fire and turn off the
valves from the diesel tank to the generator. No injuries or accidents reported.
615
NARRATIVE(4)
Narrative Title:Chief
Narrative Author: Balentine, Rick
Narrative Date: 05/21/2021 10:42:16
Narrative Apparatus ID: 601
Narrative:
AFD paged out to report of structure fire at Elam Gravel Pit. Upon arrival at entrance I was flagged down by Elam
employee who accompanied me to the fire scene along with Pitkin County Deputy 68 following. During conversation with
employee, I don't recall name, it was my perception that the fire burning included the tires on a 6000 gal.fuel trailer which
was identified as diesel fuel. With this info I asked dispatch to do an AFD all hands page and to also do a mutual aid page
from RFFR Station 45 and it was decided to begin a defensive attack and cool down the tank from a safe distance with
deck gun from E-63 while we established a water supply and was able to get more intel on fire. Upon further investigation
by Cpt.Spaulding it was determined that the fuel trailer was not on fire, yet the adjacent generator structurer/trailer to the
west was heavily involved threatening to impinge and ignite the fuel trailer. Fire attack crews were able to shut the fuel
supply to the generator trailer fueling the fire thus slowing down the spread and intensity of the fire until it could be fully
extinguished by the hand crews. 601 called Pitkin County Operations director 03 to assist with initial fire investigation
additionally AFD Interim Fire Marshal Jan Legersky also investigated the scene.AFD was assisted by Aspen Ambulance,
Roaring Fork Fire and the Pitkin County Sheriffs Office in bring the situation under control. No injuries were reported.
https://secure.emergencyreporting.com/nfirs/print.asp?printtype=2&printtype=3&printtype=4&printtype=5&printtyperadio=5b&printOption=l&printOptio... 2/9
