MQEW-1 (East Highwall)
Area: 2.46 acres.
This area consists of the eastern portion of the Mica Pit, and the east half of the Mica Pit floor(referred
to elsewhere in permit documents as the Pit Lake). This area contains a tall hill with saleable material
outcropping on its west side which is being removed. The top of the slope,at the east boundary of the
affected area, is approximately 120 feet above the present pond level. The slope exhibits about 60
vertical feet of overburden and at least a 60-foot thickness of underlying saleable material.
The upper surface of the ore body dips to the east, and the upper surface has been stripped of its
overburden. As such, it is prepared for mining of the ore body to begin. Due to the limited distance
(eastward) to the boundary, there is insufficient room in this affected area to remove more overburden
or mine the ore body eastward to a significant degree. The upper part of this east wall is stripped, and
benching of the east highwall is ready to begin, however mining on this area will not commence until
mining in the west wall area is completed.
The plan is to start extraction by drilling and blasting from the top of the ore body, beginning halfway
down the east wall where the ore body has been exposed, moving down to the pit floor, and create the
walls and benches as mining progresses. Material removal will occur in response to demand.
The same wall and bench configuration described above for the West Highwall will be used in this area.
Backfilling on the floor and benches can be done at toe of slopes with waste rock and fines to flatten
wall slopes and create gentle sloping bench areas on the east highwall and pit floor.
If the Pit Lake remains as a permanent feature, its total surface will be 0.7 acres or less.
Topsoil will be placed on upper benches on East highwall area.
IMC-1 Quarry
Area: 1.71 acres.
This was a large pre-law pit, but has not been mined under this permit. There has been permit-related
"disturbance" in this area, but it has been limited to clean-up of certain dumped items, and the more
recent placement of backfill materials. Backfilling has been completed, and the area is ready for grading
and final reclamation.
PMD-5 Dump
Area: 2.17 acres.
This is an old dump area in the SE part of the permit, well apart from other affected areas of the permit.
It is used as an explosive storage area, and several magazines are presently there. No mining or
stockpiling is carried out here.
The top of the dump is a level pad, and the north and west sides of this affected area have been sloped.
The slopes contain good vegetation. The top of the dump requires only minor grading and removal of
the magazines, for it to be ready for final reclamation.
This area will not go into final reclamation until all blasting has been completed.
MQND-3 (North Dump)
Area: 1.79 acres.
This is an old dump area located on the north side of the Mica Pit; it has not been disturbed in twenty
years.
No material extraction is planned for this area, and no further placement of material is planned. We do
not plan any surface disturbances in this area.
Final reclamation is well along in this area: erosion is controlled and the area presently contains good
revegetation, including trees.
