anticipated that no bedrock will be encountered. The water table is currently approximately 15
feet below the surface in the permit area. Should the water table be encountered during mining,
four feet of backfill will be placed in the affected areas.
The main applicable United States Geological Survey geologic map for the site is from 1979.
The area of the Mystic Soil was mapped by Tweto(1979)z as consisting of unconsolidated
Quaternary-Tertiary alluvium, sand, and gravel (Holocene)underlain by the Alamosa Formation.
7.1 Geology and Resource Discussion
Operators experience in the area and the details of a Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS)site-specific soil report(Exhibit I)indicate that the deposit is at least 80 inches deep and
consists of overburden and 12+inches of topsoil in the area of the deposit. Material balances for
reclamation purposes assume that the top 12+inches of the deposit contain loam, making it
suitable for topsoil. Two soil types are found on the majority of the site, Gunbarrel (Map symbol
`31')and Mosca(Map symbol `50'). The Gunbarrel is described as having three horizons—HI,
H2, and H3. The Gunbarrel horizon H1 is 0 to 5 inches: loamy sand, and the Gunbarrel horizon
H2 is 5 to 28 inches: loamy sand. The Mosca is described as having three horizons—H1, H2, and
H3. The Mosca horizon H1 is 0 to 8 inches: loamy sand, while the Mosca horizon H2 is 8 to 32
inches: loamy sand. Thus, approximately 28 inches of the Gunbarrel and 32 inches of the Mosca
contain loam and therefore are suitable for topsoil. For the purposes of volume calculations 12
inches of topsoil is assumed and a maximum of five feet of`soil product'. Mining will not
expose bedrock.
8. Primary and Secondary Commodities
The operation will produce raw materials including sand, and mixed alluvium. These materials
will be sold and shipped off-site. Crushing and screening are the only processing anticipated
ZTweto, O.(1979). Geologic Map of Colorado 9:500 000.
