December 9, 2020 C-1981-035/King Coal Mine JHB
Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization; Placement:
At King I the Refuse pile appears dry. The operator has continued to shape the upper pile to establish and
access ramp roughly parallel to the face of the pile. It appears that they have shaped a temporary berm on the
upslope side of the ramp to help control runoff and direct flow to the south of the pile and into the collection ditch.
The operator has also shaped temporary berms across the upper pile to help slow runoff across the top of the pile
and help direct any runoff into the collection ditches. This is appropriate and should help with winter management
of the pile. No recent end dumped refuse piles were observed on the upper refuse pile.
The upland collection ditch on the north side of the upper refuse are appears dry and intact. There was no visual
evidence of any blockage in this ditch. The west collection ditch (lower refuse area) appeared free of debris and
intact.
The lower refuse area was graded and had no recent end dumped refuse piles stored on it. The lower refuse pile
appears graded to facilitate drainage off the pile. There was no sign of low puddling areas.
SUPPORT FACILITIES - Rule 4.04:
The facilities area is tidy and organized.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED NA
OTHER (SPECIFY) NA
ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS/COMPLIANCE
No enforcement actions were initiated as a result of this inspection, nor are any pending.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 4
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 2
Page 3 of 6
