Po.G 3
Exhibit D - MINING PLAN
Native/Pierre Mine is located in horizontally bedded buff, gypsiferous Pierre shale of lower Cretaceous
age.
The current operator of this clay mine began this operation in 1915 and has continuously mined to date.
The mining method as approved,in the 1977 permit is similar;the only changes are the utilization of
more modern efficient equipment. The primary reason for this conversion is to add approximately 24
acres to the permit area that covers the reserves leased or owned by Summit Brick and will extend the
life of the mine. The additional area has been owned by the current owners for the purpose of mining
since approximately 1915.
The primary commodities to be produced are clay and a sand borrow material. There are not any
incidental products created. The entire mining sequence is in the Pierre Shale formation. The ore body
consists of clay and sand with the sand typically overlying the clay.Depth from the surface to the top of
the clay/sand will vary from 1'to 5'.The usable clay varies from 0'to 15'thick.Maximum pit depth may
reach the 20-foot range but average depth will be less than 15 feet.
Mining will be accomplished using a dozer, loader and/or scraper depending on the distance the
material is to be moved. As mining progresses through the mining area, all available topsoil will be
removed, and will either be spread over areas previously graded to final slope or will be stored for
future application. The overburden will then be removed and used as backfill or will be stockpiled where
it will not be mixed with the topsoil. If the topsoil land overburden)stockpiles remain undisturbed for
more than a year, the approved seed mix will be applied to prevent erosion,to control weeds, and to
keep them viable for reclamation. The exposed clay and/or sand is then mined and stockpiled on the pit
floor of a previously mined area. The mined slope along the permit boundary will be 3H to 1V or flatter,
while the working face slopes in the interior of the permit boundary will be a maximum of 0.5 H to 1 V.
No blasting will take place at this mine.
The stockpiled material is then transported to the nearby brick plant by truck.
Mining operations including the truck traffic at this pit are intermittent and typically occur in less than
30 days of the year and only as this clay type is needed by the brick factory.Activity usually occurs
monthly.
Map Exhibit C shows the current permit area and the area being added to the permit.Mining to date has
utilized nearly all the Eastern Portion of the existing 110 Permit.
Map Exhibit C-1 shows the next stage of mining consisting of the active matenai storage area,
w a+wv mining area and i eieased reclaimed area reaay tor release. Note that, that there will
ce-a portions of the area-that are will e in the final stages of reclamation as mining progresses thru
the mine. The maximum extent of disturbance for the stockpning-_ g and mining area will not
exceed 10.0 acres. Mining will progress into additiona, area to the west only after a like sized area is
reclaimed. id Feleased.
This will stay a dry mining operation of clay. Except for dust suppression,no water usage is anticipated
at the mine site and no surface or ground water is retained.Surface water will be diverted around the
Summit Brick&Tile Company - Native/Pierre Mine 125/10 2020
