Rule 3.1.8 Wildlife
The location, terrain, and habitat available to wildlife on affected lands is limited to birds, reptiles, and
small mammals including rodents, rabbits, and small predators such as coyote and fox. This operation is
expected to have little to no impact on wildlife that might utilize the open space other than to afford
vegetation and small animal habitat suitable for their life cycle. Colorado Parks and Wildlife specialists
will be requested to review and comment on the reclamation plan regarding local wildlife concerns or
opportunities for support or improvement of wildlife habitat found at this location.
Rule 3.1.9 Topsoiling
(1) The Kim Loam soil horizon present above target gravel deposit ranges in thickness from two to five
feet in depth. During stripping operations, the top one foot of soil horizon including the surface
vegetation will be pushed to stockpiles within the phase area being worked. The surface materials piles
will be dozed to result in 3:1 maximum exposed slopes during temporary storage of one year until
pushed to final location onto adjacent areas. Soil encountered below one foot from the surface is
similar texture and color and may be pushed against surface soil stockpiles during cycles of gravel
extraction and prior to re-application of the lower horizon soils on the pit floor or used as fill along pit
limits. Planting media materials will be protected from undue erosion and degradation by grading and
berming for containment of soils during storm events.
(2) This site provides minimal woody vegetation that will be incorporated into the soil by bulldozer
action during removal and push to stockpile area. Any trees removed for mining will be mulched and
used for moisture retention for grass land establishment.
(3) Planting medium(topsoil) piles will be located in relatively small volumes(up to 5000 tons)in
proximity to final placement location graded to 3:1 exposed slopes and bermed to contain sediment
loss due to storm event. Planting medium piles stored more than one year prior to final placement will
be seeded with annual grass or grain to help control wind and run-off erosion.
(4) The reclamation plan is intended to address limited footprint areas adjacent to one another with a
progression of activities of stripping and stockpile(s)formation, gravel extraction, backfilling, placement
of planting medium, and re-vegetation. Stripping and stockpile formation take place in one dozer task
period and planting medium placement in a second.
