September 24,2020 C-1980-007/West Elk Mine LDS
ventilates the gas from the caved area after the longwall has passed. The mine ventilation plan requires that the
methane concentration in the caved areas of the mine be maintained above 25%,well above the methane explosive
range of 5-15%,while the concentration of methane on the working face and in open areas of the mine must be
well below the explosive range.Mr,Clawson explained that the flare shuts off automatically if the methane
concentration drops too low(below 25%),or if the gas pressure in the well drops too low.MCC were still refining
operational practices with the goal of keeping the flare running.
All of the equipment close to the flare on the pad was electrically connected to a ground field. In order to
achieve a sufficiently low resistance, the ground field had been constructed by burying a series of metal plates in a
150' long trench on the pad.
A fire box containing extinguishers and hand tools was readily accessible on the SSI-5 pad.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
N/A
OTHER(SPECIFY)
N/A
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 3
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 3 of 13
