If you would like more information on Energy
Publishing, please contact them at 865.584.6294.
• Vietnamese steelmaker abandons BF plant development: Vietnamese steel producer Hoa Sen
Group has withdrawn from a $10 billion steel plant under construction, which was planned to have
multiple blast furnaces with a production capacity of 16 mtpa, due to a glut in Chinese output,
slowing demand and environmental protests.
Coal Equity
• Daily Change: ARCH (down 0.55%), ARLP (down 0.60%), BTU (down 5.54%), CCR (up 1.64%),
CEIX (down 3.44%), CTRA (down 4.03%), CSO.V (flat), HCC (down 0.90%), HNRG (up 7.23%),
METC (down 0.78%), and NRP (flat).
Capp Netback Prices (a positive netback indicates Capp steam coal is theoretically competitive overseas
and a negative netback indicates it is theoretically `out -of -the -money')
• Sep 2020 Capp Rail Netback Price: ($14.62)/ton;
04 2020 Capp Rail Netback Price: ($14.51)/ton;
• Q1 2021 Capp Rail Netback Price: ($10.15)/ton;
• 2021 Capp Rail Netback Price: ($13.65)/ton;
• 2022 Capp Rail Netback Price: ($9.39)/ton;
• Capp River/New Orleans Netback: Sep 2020 is ($20.11)/ton; Q4 2020 is ($20.83)/ton; Q1 2021
is ($16.07)/ton; 2021 is ($18.29)/ton; and 2022 is ($14.45)/ton
EIA Weekly Production: For the week ended August 8t", estimated US production was 10.4 million short
tons (mst), roughly the same as last week (call it about 1.0-1.5 trains less.) Compared to the same week
last year, production is down 22.5% and year-to-date using the unadjusted figures for Q2 '20, production
is down over 117 mst or -27%. For the week, 59 thousand railcars were loaded, again about the same as
last week but down 23.3% YoY. Much of the increased production since the beginning of July has been in
the PRB with deliveries from the area rising steadily each week. We have been anticipating this given
reasonably good power demand and natgas prices that are finally above $2.00/mmBtu. Production from
other regions have also moved higher, but at a much slower pace than the PRB.
