0010
General Shale
Building The American Dream*
Dust Abatement Plan During Periods of Mining Activity
Heavy Equipment Traffic
If practical prior to the start of mining the recycled asphalt pavement(RAP) from the main
access road will be salvaged, stockpiled, and spread back out on the access road post mining
campaign when mining is complete.
Any waste brick located on the roads, ditches or clay stockpile pad areas will be salvaged and
reused if practical in roads, stockpile pad areas, and ditches.
When clay is mined from the pit the primary dust concern will be dust generated from heavy
equipment traffic from the pit to the product stockpile.
A water truck will be kept onsite and utilized as often as necessary to minimize fugitive dust
generated from heavy equipment traffic roadways.
Stockpile pad areas and other open areas will be watered to minimize dust from these areas.
Water will be obtained from the mine pit which has a well permit, SEO Well Permit 76233-F,
through the state engineer's office.
Heavy equipment speeds will be reduced when dust presents an issue until the water truck can
reduce dust.
During high wind events that last more than I hour and fugitive dust is leaving the property
boundary, the mining operation will be temporarily suspended until the high winds slow down.
The mining operation may continue if the water truck can keep up with the fugitive dust during
this high wind event.
Stockpiles
When mining is complete the topsoil and overburden-interburden stockpile will be seeded with
the permitted topsoil seed mixture in the spring, fall or winter if frost is not an issue. The
stockpile(s) will be covered with a tackifier or grog(only on slopes located interior to the mine)
to minimize dust until suitable stand of grass established. If the stockpile(s) are completed
during the summer or when seeding is impractical the stockpile(s) will be covered with tackifier
or grog (only on slopes located interior to the mine)to minimize dust and then seeded in the next
available growing season.
Clay stockpiles will not be seeded to minimize vegetation contamination into the raw material.
However, it is most likely that the clay stockpiles, the longer they occur at the site, will establish
grass on them. From past experience the clay stockpiles develop a thin surface crust that protects
them from wind erosion.
General Shale, 1845 West Dartmouth Avenue,Denver Colorado 80110 Page 4 of 5
T: 1-800-477-9002 1 F: 1-303-781-1818 1 www.generaishale.com
