SITE DESCRIPTION EXHIBIT B
SOILS INFORMATION
The following information was obtained from site observa-
tions and the basic soils and vegetation information found thru
the USDA' s National Soils information page and the Soil Survey of
Huerfano County. The following soil information is made part of
this application. Soil units are shown on the USDA map, repro-
duced on page 5 following this text . The photo map shows the
surrounding vegetation features and soil types . This site lies
on a mesa top terrace deposit of gravel that runs east/west in
the northern part of Huerfano County. There are two soils types
found on the mine site .
The 57 - Nunn clay loam, 0 to 3% slopes soil series covers approx-
imately 6 . 9 acres or 69% of the mine area . The general soils
description indicates that the Nunn series consists of very deep,
well drained soils that formed in loess and mixed alluvium. Nunn
soils in this area is on a terrace or alluvial fan on the mesa
top . The upper most horizon is a 0 to 12 inches or an average of
8 inches of a gravely loam, or brown, fine grained soil usable as
topsoil . Underlying the topsoil is a 25 to 35 foot lens of
gravely sand. The bedrock that underlays the gravel is part of
the Pierre Shale and is described as a predominantly siltstone/
claystone in excess of 3000 feet deep. The top of this layer will
become the mine floor.
The 84 - Ustic Torriorthents - Rock outcrop complex, 4 to 40% slopes
soil series covers approximately 3 . 17 acres or 31% of the mine
area . The general soil description indicates that this soil is
in extremely rough, deeply eroded areas along the mesa front .
They are shallow and moderately deep and well drained, soils due
to the rock associated with them and the steep face they lay on.
On the mine area there is little or no salvageable topsoil or
growth medium material on the face .
AUSTIN & BETSY CLENNIN- BECKER PIT May 7, 2020
4
