SUNDAY MINE COMPLEX-HYDROGEOLOGIC REPORT
probing. The Top Rim Sandstone appeared to be dry or nearly dry in the area. The total depth
of the hole was 600 ft from surface.
The screened interval (2-inch schedule 80 PVC) was completed within the Top Rim Sandstone
in accordance with the geophysical log and direction by EFR; the interval was from 490 to 570
ft. A lockable steel surface casing was cemented in place for the surface completion. Appendix
E shows details of the well completion and Table 9-1 presents a summary of well construction
information.
The well was developed by air lifting with the drill rig and followed by additional pumping with a
nitrogen piston pump. The total estimated volume purged was 122.7 gallons. Due to high
turbidity conditions, additional well development was conducted by pumping in June 2013.
Groundwater recovery rates at the MW-SUN3 well are slow.
9.1.4 MW-TPZ1
Well MW-TPZ1 is permitted by the DWR under permit number 287946. Drilling of the well
borehole commenced on May 7, 2013, and was completed on May 8, 2013, by D.A. Smith
Drilling Company. The well location is in SE 1/4, SE IA, Section 10, Township 44 North, Range 18
West, New Mexico Principal Meridian. The well was installed just downslope of the main
development rock area (waste rock dump) of the Topaz Mine. The well borehole was drilled to a
depth of 29 ft to confirm penetration of bedrock which was suspected to have been penetrated
at approximately 18 ft. The hole was backfilled with cuttings to 20 ft and the well was installed.
No groundwater was encountered. Two-inch schedule 40 PVC screen was set from 10 to 20 ft
and the remainder of the well completed with blank casing as shown in the well diagram
(Appendix E). A lockable steel surface casing was cemented in place for the surface
completion. Appendix E presents the well permit, construction form, and well diagram
documents for the MW-TPZ1 well. Table 9-1 presents a summary of well construction
information.
10.0 GROUNDWATER MONITORING
Groundwater monitoring activities for the SMC project include groundwater elevation
measurements and water quality sampling. Surface water quality monitoring was not included in
the water quality monitoring plan as there are no perennial or intermittent water bodies in the
area affected by the SMC (Denison 2012).
Western Water& Land, Inc. 30
