4413 C:\RiBOL-RD
NE DIRL ND,CO8O4bb-0b3i
Sib-582-0833
RECEIVED
March 17,2020 MAR 1 9 2020
Amy Eschberger
Environmental Protection Specialist DIVISION OF RECLAMATION
Division of Reclamation,Mining, and Safety MINING AND SAFETY
1313 Sherman St. Room 215
Denver,CO 80203
RE:90-day extension request;M1977-410 February 12,2020 Notice of Compliance Problems
Dear Ms. Eschberger,
Calais Resources Inc. (Calais)has received the February 12,2020 Notice of Compliance Problems with
Required Corrective Actions. Two problems were presented in the Notice, failure to file a Succession of
Operators within 30 days and a failure to minimize disturbances to the prevailing hydrologic balance. A
time frame of 60 days was given for corrective action, with a Succession of Operators application and a
Technical Revision addressing Idaho Tunnel water management at the Cross Mine both due on April 12,
2020. Since that time, efforts to reduce the spread of Corona Virus have resulted in limitations on
gathering size and closures of schools, offices, and restaurants. While Calais continues to make progress
on the Notice of Compliance,an extension of 90 days is requested to accommodate the substantial
disruption to normal business practices caused by the Corona Virus.
In terms of progress made thus far,Calais has:
• Begun the paperwork to unify the company name among permitting agencies(including financial
warranty forms, legal right of entry, and structure agreements) to support the Succession of
Operators agreement.
• Reconnected the previously Idaho Tunnel drainage on January 29,2020 to the water treatment
system, resulting in substantial water quality improvement at the Industrial Wastewater outfall.
All February testing has produced results below the 30-day average permit limit for all chemical
constituents except for a single potentially dissolved cadmium detection of 2 ug/L,above the 30-
day permit limit of 0.b3 ug/L. Potentially dissolved cadmium was below detection limits in
subsequent analysis.
