1100318 R0T0 0811 JRW1 4
2 Investigation Scope & Site Description
2.1 Investigation Scope
At the request of counsel for Continental Materials Corporation,3 Ungaretti & Harris, Exponent
Failure Analysis Associates (Exponent) conducted an investigation of a landslide and
subsequent related slope movements that commenced on December 2, 2008 at the Pikeview
Quarry located in Section 9, Township 13 South, Range 67 West, 6th Principal Meridian in El
Paso County, Colorado. The site is located at the northwest limits of Colorado Springs west of
the intersection of Interstate 25 and Woodmen Road. The physical address of the property is
7250 Allegheny Drive in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The investigated landslide-damaged slope has subsequently experienced episodic movement
ranging in magnitude from relatively minor to large slope movements. All post-December 2,
2008 slope movements are nested within the landslide boundaries established on December 2,
2008. Herein, the landslide that commenced on December 2, 2008 is referred to as the Pikeview
Landslide.
The scope of Exponent’s investigation included multiple site inspections, detailed surface
mapping of Pikeview Landslide features and geologic conditions on adjacent slope areas,
subsurface exploration, installation and monitoring of instrumentation, a topographic survey of
the site, laboratory testing of rock and soil samples, review of available documents,
interpretation of historical aerial and ground photographs, review of rainfall data, interviews of
quarry staff, geologic and engineering analysis, and preparation of this report. The initial site
inspection was performed by Jon Wren, Ph.D., P.E. and Philip Shaller, Ph.D. assisted by
Elizabeth Mathieson on March 1-3, 2011. Subsequent field inspections and analyses were
performed by a team of Exponent engineers, geologists, and engineering geologists under the
direction of Drs. Wren and Shaller.

3 Owner of Pikeview Quarry
