ResponseSpill and
CountermeasuresNEWMONT •r the Cresson Project
NORTH AA11FRICA
Sustainability& External Relations
At the Midway Fuel Farm, the underground lined area is not suitable to serve as secondary containment during the
portion of the year when this ground is frozen and/or snow and ice-covered.This renders the subsurface soil
impermeable and unable to function as secondary containment.Should a significant or catastrophic release occur
from one of the single-walled fuel storage tanks the release would flow overland to the north and follow the road
towards the Ironclad Facility and NTS.
1.3 External Reporting—Reportable Quantities
Releases that occur out of doors and outside an engineered containment area and which meet or exceed the
numeric thresholds known as"RQs"as listed in Table 1, require reporting to appropriate county,State and/or
Federal agencies.Spills or releases of these substances should be immediately reported to S&ER and CC&V Team
supervisors. Use Cintellate provided on the CC&V prospector page to document the spill or release. Provide the
Cintellate Report to S&ER as soon as possible within the same shift of the occurrence so that external reporting
can be accomplished within the required 24 hours.
Table 1 Reportable Quantities if Released to Land f1)Bulk Chemicals
RQ of listed Density of product Concentration of
Product Used at CC&V Listed Chemical Chemical pounds/gallon) Listed Chemical(%) RQ of Product(gallons)
(pounds)
Diesel or Gasoline Diesel or Gasoline 1,000(2)
Hydrocarbons(1) 250
Process FluidsM 500
Antifreeze Ethylene Glycol 5,000 8.34 95.0% 631.07
Sodium Hydroxide iodium Hydroxide 1,000 12.71 50.0% 157.36
Hydrochloric Acid Hydrochloric Acid 5,000 9.83 36.0% 1,412.91
ntiscalant Phosphoric Acid 100 8.92 10.0% 112.11
Sodium Hypochlorite odium Hypochlorite 100
Calcium Hypochlorite Calcium Hypochlorite 10
Cyanide Solutions Sodium Cyanide(1) 10 8.34 0.010% 11,990.41
10 8.34 0.015% 7,993.61
10 8.34 24.0% 5.00
10 8.34 25.0% 4.80
10 8.34 26.0% 4.61
10 8.34 27.0% 4.44
0)Discharge of oil in such quantities that result in exceedance of applicable receiving water quality standards or cause a film or
sheen upon the surface of the receiving water must be reported to the National Response Center.
(2)Into or upon the navigable waters of the U.S.or shorelines in a single event
0)The Cyanide Containment Policy is included as Appendix C of this Plan. Use Table 1 to calculate the amount of cyanide released
from known quantities and concentrations.
(4)CC&V internal reporting requirements
Spills to land that exceed the RQ volume criterion in any 24-hour period must be reported to external agencies in
accordance with this SRP(see Section 5.0 for more details).A S&ER representative will complete external
notification, if and when necessary.Table 1 lists RQs of chemicals that require external spill reporting.SDS's for
specific products are contained in Appendix B.
1.4 Engineering and Structural Controls to Guard against Spills
The Cresson Project has been constructed with spill containment around fuel storage areas, chemical storage
areas, maintenance areas, and the areas in which cyanide solutions are present.Secondary containment structures
have been designed to prevent spilled materials from entering stream channels, escaping onto areas subject to
stormwater runoff, and migrating off site.Such control features will be maintained and will function at their design
----- - ----- ----- ----- -I - - -
Department THIS DOCUMENT IS UNCONTROLLED IN HARDCOPY FORMAT Doc d:NA-CCV-SER-PLAN-
1930
4----------------------------------------------------F------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------F-----------------------_---------.....-.......,......._......;
