Inspection Topic: excess Spoil & Dev. Waste-Trash Pit -
Action has been taken regarding the so-called trash pit area where the
inspection report describes "unsightliness" and "deleterious effects." R
Rudy Fontanari has attempted to improve the area of concern. Specifically, M
Fµ
he has backfilled an area far to the north of the active quarry that has been
referred to at times as a "trash pit." This area was them compacted and
graded, as illustrated. As Spring arrives and vegetation resumes growing,
the area will likely be undifferentiated from the surface around it.This area
remains within the currently disturbed area of the mine.
The adjacent photograph illustrates the final result.
Inspection Topic: Gen. Compliance with Mine Plan
The inspection report's evaluation of the fuel tank being stored in the Middle
Mine area is an area of general confusion to the Operator. It is true that a fuel
storage tank that has been empty for some years(at least two years)was
relocated approximately 120 feet from its prior location, however, the tank
remains unused/empty and is still located near the southeast corner of the
permit area, and well within the area described and assessed as "disturbed."
A catch basin has been added under the empty tank, as illustrated.
It is the operators understanding that a fuel storage tank is a necessary item for
operating the quarry, and that, assuming it meets other regulations regarding
storage tanks for fuel, it is included as part of his 110 permit that was converted
to a 112 permit, and that the tank that was present at the time, can remain on-site. Page 22 of the
approved Mine Plan (attached) refers to the idea that "the storage area for equipment, storage and
loading will be within the disturbed area of each current phase." This was approved, and the tank
(though currently unused) is clearly within the disturbed area, so Fontanari is generally confused as to
the nature of the action which must be taken should we place the fuel tank into use rather than
transporting fuel to the site.
Operator proposes to consult with Division prior to placing the tank into use. If there are additional
regulations that must be complied with prior to use of the tank, or, if any technical amendment is
required for the use of the tank at its current location, this will be cleared with Division first. If Division
requires removal of the empty tank, Operator would like to first clarify what steps Division believes
would be necessary first,to keep the tank on site, then,to operate it for fuel storage.
As noted, there is currently no fuel stored in the tank.
