The
guidelines include spatial buffer zones and temporal recommendations, which are intended to protect
nesting raptors. The CPW suggests that if the guidelines are observed, that the majority of individuals
within a species will continue to occupy the nesting site where disturbance is a potential factor. CPW
guidelines for select species are shown in Table 3.
Table 3. Timing and buffer guidelines for occupied raptor nests
Species Buffer Zone Typical Nesting Season
American Kestrel
Burrowing Owl 150 feet 15 March—31 October
Cooper's Hawk 0.25 mile 1 April— 15 August
Ferruginous Hawk 0.5 mile 1 February- 15 Jul
Golden Eagle 0.50 mile 15 December— 15 Jul
Great Horned Owl
Long-eared Owl 0.25 mile 1 March— 15 Jul
Northern Harrier 0.25 mile 1 April— 15 August
Osprey 0.25 mile 1 April—31 August
Peregrine Falcon 0.50 mile 15 March—31 Jul
Prairie Falcon 0.50 mile 15 March— 15 Jul
Red-tailed Hawk 0.33 mile 15 February— 15 Jul
Sharp-shinned Hawk 0.25 mile 1 April— 15 August
Swainson's Hawk 0.25 mile 1 April— 15 Jul
* Great Horned Owls and Kestrels are relatively tolerant of human activity. Keep activity to a minimum
during breeding season.
CPW will provide guidance on future survey requirements and timing limitations for project-related
disturbances, if applicable.
WestWater Engineering Page 3 of 6 August 2019
