EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
An avian nest survey was conducted on April 5, 2019 within the proposed boundaries of
the Loveland Ready Mix Concrete Knox Project site in La Porte, Colorado. The nest
survey was conducted at the request of Loveland Ready Mix in response to concerns
regarding impacts to birds at the project site. Two nests were identified within the
proposed project site, both were determined to be magpie nests. Additional
investigations outside the proposed project area identified squirrel nests within trees to
the west and south of the project site. No raptor, eagle, or owl nests were identified
within the project area or adjacent areas surveyed. All nests within the project site were
identified and located on the included aerial. None of the nests were active during our
survey.
An additional database search of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
web site identified bald eagle nests 1.76 miles east and 4.0 miles northwest of the project
site. A golden eagle nest site was identified 2.1 miles northwest of the project site, and
osprey nests to the southeast and northwest of the project site, ranging from 1.0 to 4.6
miles from the project site.
The lack of stratified vegetation cover, significant water features, and diversified and
plentiful food sources limits the potential value of the project site as significant avian
habitat. The limits apply to nesting, foraging, and migration. The potential for direct
impacts to avian species from the proposed operation was concluded to be minimal based
on the lack of preferred habitat for the majority of avian species likely in the area.
Loveland Ready Mix Concrete Page 1
2019 Knox Project Avian Nest Survey
