2.0 Test Cell Design Features
2.1 Test Cell Foundation
The Test Cell foundation will be VLF-1 leached ore within a section of a haul road. The existing
haul road has a gradient of 10%.
2.2 Test Cell Liner System
The footprint of the Test Cell will be lined using an 80 mil double-sided textured linear low density
polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembrane liner in order to capture leached solution. The liner will be
placed on prepared subgrade (i.e., leached ore).
3.0 Stability Analyses
Stability analyses were performed to confirm that the Test Cell stability meets the requirements of
the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety Minerals Program (Division)'. This section
presents the results of the stability analyses.
3.1 Material Parameters
For the stability analyses, the following material properties were considered:
➢ Test Cell Foundation: Modeled with a unit weight of 120 pounds per cubic foot(pcf), an angle
of internal friction of 40 degrees and no cohesion based on testing performed for the design of
the VLF-1 leach pad;
➢ Run of Mine(ROM) Ore: Modeled with a unit weight of 110 pcf, an angle of internal friction of
40 degrees and no cohesion, based on previous testing of crushed ore as the materials have
similar geotechnical characteristics; and
➢ Liner Interface: The interface between the geomembrane and the ore placed above and
below was modeled with an angle of internal friction of 29 degrees with 275 pounds per square
foot(psf)cohesion (large strain). This strength is based on the results of interface shear
strength testing performed as part of the VLF-1 design where crushed rock overliner was tested
versus a 100-mil smooth high density polyethylene (HDPE)geomembrane placed over low
volume solution collection fill (refer to Appendix A), which is representative of the test cell
conditions.
1 Cazier,T. and Wait,T.C.(2018)"Proposed Slope Stability/Geotechnical Analysis Policy for the Mined Land
Reclamation Board."Memorandum dated 12 April 2018.
