Geologic map of the Pitch Mine area. Figure from Nash (1988).
3.1.3. Geologic Structures
Major structural features at the Mine are faults and folds associated with Laramide deformation.
During the Laramide, reverse faulting was accommodated by the Chester fault, which is oriented
approximately north-south along the western flank of the southern Sawatch Range (Figures 3-2
and 3-3). The fault zone is characterized by complex faulting that includes short segments
separated by near-orthogonal tear faults (Nash, 1980) (Figure 3-3). Along the fault, the dip varies
from 200 to near vertical, and at the Mine the fault dips 600 to 700 to the east (Olson, 1988)
(Figure 3-4 and Drawing 01). The fault has accommodated at least 1400 ft of vertical
9 The Pleistocene epoch lasted from -2.5 Ma to 11.7thousand years ago (ka).
EXHIBIT E-RULE 6.4.5(AMENDED RECLAMATION PLAN) Page 15
HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY
