Discharge
was occurring from the Last Chance Pond (Photo 15). Embankments of the ponds were well vegetated and stable.
There were no indications of erosion.

Photo 15: The outlet of the Last Chance Pond discharging.

Four ponds are located throughout the refuse disposal area at the Deserado Mine., The RP -1, RP-2/3, RP-4 and
RP -5 pond. The RP-1 pond was muddy at the bottom and no discharge was occurring. The spillways for the pond
were clear and capable of functioning as designed. The embankment was well vegetated and stable. There were
no erosional features observed. The inlets to the pond were in good condition. The RP -2/3 pond consists of three
cells, the east cell, the west cell and the main cell. All cells of the RP -2/3 pond were holding water. There was no
discharge out of the main cell. The embankments of the ponds were in good condition and stable. The riprap
channel between the east and main cells has become eroded. The Division recommends replacing the riprap in the
channel to ensure that down-cutting does not occur . The embankment between the east cell and the main cell had
evidence that it was overtopped in the middle. Minor under-cutting of the embankment and a small depression
were observed in the middle of the embankment. The Division recommends repairing the undercut section and
replacing material on top of the embankment to the original design specifications. The RP -4 pond was holding
water. There was no discharge occurring at the time of the inspection. Evidence of recent discharge was
observed. The pond’s embankments were stable with no indications of erosion. The embankment had well-
established vegetation in it. There was a small tree noted next to the primary spillway. The Division recommends
clearing the tree to ensure the stability of the spillway. The RP -5 pond was holding water. No discharge was
occurring. The embankments were well vegetated and stable. No erosional concerns were identified.

The SDH-3/5 D-Seam Dewatering System consists of three cells, an upper cell, a middle cell and a lower cell.
The system currently uses the lower cell exclusively. T he pond was holding water during the inspection.
Discharge into Red Wash was observed. The spillways for the pond were clear of debris and functioning as
designed. The embankment for the pond was well vegetated and stable. There were no erosional concerns
identified.
