Mr. Peter Hays
RE:Lazy Two Pit M-2019-001
April 17, 2019
groundwater elevation and a well permit and approved augmentation plan will be obtained
from Colorado Division of Water Resources before groundwater is exposed.
Test pits were excavated on the property to evaluate the depth and spatial extent of the gravel
reserve. The test pits were excavated several feet below the identified gravel reserve and no
groundwater was exposed in any of the pits. Where available, construction reports from
domestic wells near the site were also evaluated (available well construction reports
attached). Information from the reports is provided in the table below. Although the wells
on the Mellott property did not have available construction reports, the static water level in
the wells was estimated by the property owner.
Well Location Approximate Well Location Estimated Static Water Level
(Property) (from Lazy Two Pit) (feet below ground surface)
Ross On-site unknown
Burris 600 feet SW 72
JEM Ranch 1400 feet west 21
Thomas Ranch 3000 feet north 75
Maclean 800 feet east unknown
Indian Creek Ranch 2000 feet west 78
Whitfield 1800 feet south 22
Mellott 500 feet south 75
It is difficult to spatially compare groundwater elevations using depth to water since ground
surface elevations vary between well locations. However, some general inferences can be
made from the available data. Based on the available information, as described below, it
would be reasonable to assume that groundwater beneath the Lazy Two Pit site could range
from as shallow as 20 feet to as deep as 50 feet below the ground surface. These estimates
place the normal groundwater elevation at least 10 feet below the estimated pit depth.
Additionally, from the well construction reports with available bore logs, it appears that
water was not encountered in the upper sand and gravel materials, but in deeper shale and
sandstone formations.
The Lazy Two Pit property is generally lower than properties to the east and west of the
proposed mining site. This means that although depth to water in some adjacent property
wells may be about 75 below the surface, ground elevations where wells are located east and
west of the site (Burris, Thomas Ranch, Indian Creek Ranch) could be as much as 20 to 40
feet higher than the Lazy Two Pit ground surface. Wells in the region with shallower depth
to water measurements (JEM Ranch, Whitfield) appear to be at elevations more similar to the
Lazy Two Pit ground surface elevation, but these wells are also located adjacent to the Spring
Creek drainage— a northwest to southeast running drainage located west and south of the site
where higher groundwater elevations would be expected. Although the Mellott well is at a
similar ground surface elevation as the Lazy Two Pit site and the static depth to water was
estimated at 75 feet, there are no records documenting the measurement and the accuracy
could be suspect.
.4-
t b U e e Q(-t h Page 4 of 6
