4/8/2019 State.co.us Executive Branch Mail-Climax Mine-5 Dam Seepage Return Line
Climax Mine - 5 Dam Seepage Return Line
3 messages
Kelts, Diana <dkelts@fmi.com> Mon, Apr 8, 2019 at 9:17 AM
To: "Scott- DNR, Eric" <eric.scott@state.co.us>
Cc: "Lazuk, Raymond" <rlazuk@fmi.com>, "Haag, James" <jhaag 1 @fmi.com>
Eric,
In September 2017 Climax notified DRMS of a leak in the 5 Dam Seepage Return Line within the Mayflower Tailing
Storage Facility (TSF). Knowing that this line would eventually be abandoned, in August 2018 Climax submitted TR-28
with an updated EPP and a memo describing our plans to modify the seepage return line. Over this weekend our
technicians observed the appearance of new 5 Dam seepage within the Mayflower TSF in the general vicinity of the
previous leak and a significant drop in flow from the outlet at 3 Dam Pump Station, indicating that the 5 Dam Seepage
Return Line was becoming plugged or possibly collapsing. Therefore, in accordance with the EPP (Section T-5.3.2)and
the attached memo from TR-28, Climax is implementing Modification Plan 2 which diverts seepage to Mayflower TSF via
the Quarter Cutout Valve and North Cutout Channel. Also attached is the memo from the FOR that was included in TR-28
indicating there are no stability issues with the dam from this modification. Climax will be evaluating whether to proceed
with Modification 3 or Modification 4 during the 2019 construction season.
Please let us know if you would like to discuss any of this by phone or during your next inspection at Climax. You can
contact Raymond Lazuk at (719)486-7584 or myself at(719)486-7525.
Thank you,
Diana Kelts
2 attachments
Memo 5 Dam Seepage Return Line Plans.pdf
- 1220K
FOR Memo 5 Dam Seepage Return Line.pdf
60K
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/1?ik=1481 af980f&view=pt&search=all&permth id=th read-f%3A1630259564844798509&simpl=msg-f%3A 163025956484... 1/1
