1
The establishment and maintenance of grasses is restricted by the clay loam surface layer and the clayey
subsoil. A mulch of plant residue reduces runoff and helps moisture retention. Applications of nitrogen
' and phosphorous-containing fertilizers and manure are needed to maintain fertility. Irrigation may be
necessary during dry periods.
Ustic Torriorthents. clayey. zero to 50 percent slope - These soils consist mainly of clayey fill material
that has been placed on various other soils. The fill originated from shale and was created mainly as a
berm around the north and west edges of the existing quarry and as road fill under Highway 93 and
nearby gravel roads.
' Composition, runoff, and water capacity of this unit is variable and permeability is slow. Water erosion
can be severe.
Plantings are difficult to establish on this soil unit. A mulch of plant residue helps reduce runoff,
maintain tilth, and conserve moisture. Selecting adapted plants is important and fertilization with manure,
' phosphorous and nitrogen helps improve fertility. Supplemental irrigation may be necessary.
Torrifluents.very gravelly, zero to three percent slopes -Torrifluents are deep, excessively drained flood
' plain soils formed in stratified sandy and gravelly alluvium to a depth of about 60 inches.
Because this soil unit is located adjacent to the mine site, off the permit area, it will not be disturbed and
reclamation is not anticipated.
I
I
I
' I
II
I - 3
_11S ' SERGENT, HAUSKINS & BECKWITH
/ p
B I CONSULTING GEOTECNNICALENGINEERS
PHOENIX?TUCSON*ALBUOUEROUE
DENVER/LAKEWOOD•SALT LAKE CITY•EL PASO•RENO/SPARKS
