Mine Highwall Slopes
The mine highwall slopes shall be excavated to the lines and grades as shown on the detail
drawings.
Highwall overhangs shall be sloped back. Loose slough shall be removed prior to placement of
embankment soils. Loose or slough soils on the slope may be removed as the embankment soils
are being constructed.
B. Removal/Stripping of Weathered Bedrock
The weathered bedrock shall be stripped to a depth of 2' beneath the Zone IA/Weathered contact.
The weathered bedrock will not need to be stripped beneath the Zone 1 B/Weathered contact.
Care shall be taken that slabs of bedrock are not dislodged during the foundation bedrock stripping
process that increase the bedrock excavation depth beyond 2'. Shallower passes with excavating
equipment may be required during stripping to prevent slab dislodging along bedding planes.
Where claystone is encountered:
The entire foundation shall be watered, rolled and compacted to provide a suitable,non-
planar bonding surface for the first lift of embankment soil. Claystone foundation shall
be covered with slope liner fill soon after preparation to prevent drying and desiccation of
bedrock foundation.
Where excavations met with refusal(e.g. Sandstone material):
The entire foundation shall be cleaned of loose material prior to placement of the first lift
of embankment soil.
6/10 Section 02290-Page 3 of 6
