STATE OF
COLORADO Scott -DNR, Eric <eric.scott@state.co.us>
Chieftain Mine - Lakewood, Co Complaint
1 message
Randall Carrera <carrera.rand all@yahoo.com> Mon, Jan 28, 2019 at 2:35 PM
To: "eric.scott@state.co.us" <eric.scott@state.co.us>
I spoke with you earlier today on the activity at the Chieftain Mine owned by General Shale Brick and located at 15900 W.
Alameda Pkwy in Lakewood,CO. The basis of my complaint is that starting in late summer of 2018, non-mining
operations started on the south end of the Chieftain Mine which is adjacent to the Solterra Residential Community and
impacting approximately 40 residential homes ranging in value from $750K to over a million dollars..Worked that was
being preformed on the Chieftain Mine property included a)surveying, b)excavating, c)grading and d)extensive earth
movement resulting in the formation of a huge mountain of dirt. The mountain of dirt that was created is approximately
over 15ft higher than an other portion of land on the Chieftain Mine property. While the mountain of dirt was being created
with the extensive excavating and grading there was minimal dust protection. When winds kick up, dust from the property
pelts the adjacent residential homes. At this point in time, there is no activity taking place on the property and no dust or
erosion control installed or taking place. My complaint centers on the mountain of dirt that was created and the bare
unprotected land that now exists. Before this activity started, there was no bare dirt mountain and the this portion of the
property was covered with vegetation that prevented any dust storms and erosion of the land. The activity that has taken
place on the property is definitely not mining operations!!! Please look into this matter. This land should be returned to its
general state with the mountain of dirt cut back to an elevation similar to the rest of the property and treated for erosion
and dust control. I have attached a handout that I put together on the Cheiftain Mine property.
Clay Mine Info.xls
Lai 25K
