The Oak Vegetation Community is represented at lower elevations in the LMA,
notably around Lick Creek. Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) is the dominant species.
Shrubs which can be co- or sub -dominant depending upon growing conditions include
snowberry (Symphoricarpos oreophilus or S. rotundifolius) and serviceberry
(Amelanchier alnifolia). Herbaceous species such as lupine (Lupinus argenteus),
white -flowered peavine (Lathyrus leucanthus), and various upland sedge (Carex) species
are common in the understory (Johnston, 1997). Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is also
a common community component while small, sub -dominant aspen (Populus
tremuloides) stands may become established in wetter areas where this community
borders the aspen community.
The Aspen Vegetation Community adjoins Gambel oak, and is at the next higher
elevation. The dominant tree species is aspen. Shrubs which can be co- or sub -dominant
depending upon growing conditions include snowberry (Symphoricarpos oreophilus or S.
rotundifolius) and serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia). Common understory species
include Woods rose (Rosa woodsii), mountain brome (Bromus marginatus), elk sedge
(Carex geyeri), white- flowered peavine, Fendler meadow -rue (Thalictrum fendleri), and
American vetch (Vicia americans) (Johnston, 1997)
Typical vegetation in mature aspen stand on 30-40% slopes. Snowberry
(Symphoricarpos rotundifolius) is the primary understory species at this particular
location.
