0 <br />(30) Number 1 and Number 3 Mine Portals <br />The Number 1 mine portals, shown on Drawing 0-3-4, are of standard <br />design. One portal is the track entry, through which men and <br />materials traverse to and from the mine by rail, while the other is <br />the belt entry, through which coal is brought to the surface on <br />36 -inch conveyor belts. Each portal is approximately 20 feet wide by <br />9 feet high. <br />The portals for the Number 3 Mine, also shown on nrawing D-3-4, are of <br />the same standard design. <br />(31) Rail System <br />A 1,075 -foot, 42 -inch gauge, double -track rail system services the <br />North Thompson Creek Mines. Tracks are laid in a "Y" configuration, <br />• froming single tracks upon entering the mine portal. Portions of the <br />275 feet of rail serving Mine Number 1 are elevated on steel bean <br />piers supported by concrete footers. Elevated portions of the <br />800 -foot long rail system serving Mine Number 3 are supported on a <br />crib of railroad ties, filled with 1.5 -inch gravel. <br />Prior to the locomotive exiting the mine portal, several blasts are <br />sounded on the air horn. Battery-operated locomotives eliminate fuel <br />spillage. <br />(32) Roads <br />The mine is accessed by County Road 108, which is maintained by the <br />operator year-round according to plans approved by the County Planner. <br />4-13 <br />
