 r
Lysimeter Re-wetting:
The lysimeters will only properly extract water from the surrounding soil into the porous cup if a
vacuum is applied within the lysimeter. The lysimeter will naturally lose vacuum slowly over time,
but vacuum loss will be escalated if the lysimeter goes dry.Due to the dry nature of the soils below
the tailings facility, this is likely to happen. The lysimeters should, therefore,be re-wetted if vacuum
loss becomes a common issue. The procedure for re-wetting the lysimeter is:
(1) Un-clamp the white lysimeter re-wetting line,and green vacuum/pressure application
line.
(2) Using distilled water, place one end of a 1/4"plastic tube into the distilled water jug.
(3) Create a siphon on the free end of the tubing while holding the jug several feet above
the top of the metal stickup.
(4) When water is flowing through the siphon, attach to white lysimeter re-wetting line.
Allow to flow for about a minute, or until water is no longer flowing through the
siphon.
(5) Clamp the re-wetting line, and reapply the vacuum, as described above.
(6) Wait 24 hours, and then extract and discard the excess water from re-wetting(see
above). Re-apply vacuum after excess water has been discharged.
B-2
