LYSIMETER OPERATIONS INSTRUCTIONS
On August 8, 2018, Lytle Water Solutions, LLC (LWS) and Elite Drilling Services, LLC (Elite
Drilling) replaced existing porous cup lysimeters in the vicinity of the collection pond. After
completion of drilling and installation,LWS delivered the included operational instructions written
by Soil Management Systems(SMS)to Battle Mountain Resources Inc.(BMRI).These instructions
can also be found in Appendix A. The following is a synopsis for vacuum application, sample
collection, and lysimeter re-wetting for the lysimeters at site 2:
Vacuum Application:
(1) Un-clamp the green vacuum/pressure application line, keeping all others closed.
(2) Using the smaller hand pump, connect to the vacuum/pressure application line.
(3) Begin to eg ntly apply a vacuum to the line, making sure to keep the meter reading
between 3040 millibar.Do not exceed 40 millibar.
(4) Re-clamp the vacuum/pressure application line, and then detach hand pump. Keep
all lines clamped until sample collection is necessary.
(5) The lysimeter will naturally lose vacuum pressure over time, especially in dry soils.
It is important to regularly check the pressure, and re-apply if it has been lost (see
below).
Sample Collection:
(1) Open the clamps on both the green vacuum/pressure application and black fluid
return/sample collection lines, keeping the white re-wetting line clamped shut.
(2) Using the large bicycle pump, connect to the green vacuum/pressure application line.
(3) Begin to eg ntly apply pressure with the bicycle pump. The deep lysimeter will require
approximately 25 psi,and the shallow lysimeter will require approximately 13 psi to
extract samples from those respective depths. These pressures will need to be
maintained during the entire extraction period. It is important to note that if water
is,in fact, present it may take a significant amount of time to properly evacuate
all of it.
(4) When all water has been discharged, or if there is no water to extract, air will begin
to blow from the hose. Close the sample collection line and re-apply vacuum(see
below).
(5) Clamp all lines shut, and then remove pump.
B-1
