1997 by Powder River Eagle Studies, Inc.(PRES) The scope of that study was developed in
consultation with local and regional CDOW personnel. The supplemental information for the extension •
area is contained in Section 11 .2 of Tab 11.
Areas Covered by Studies
The early wildlife studies (1974 and 1979) were conducted on a lease area that included the 1980
Seneca II -W Permit Area and extended south to include portions of the Seneca II -W South Extension
area. To provide a direct correlation between the permit and study areas, the original 1980 permit area
0 974 and 1979 wildlife study areas) was designated as the wildlife study area and clearly outlined on
all maps, even though the actual wildlife studies extended beyond the designated study area
boundaries. Wildlife occurrence and usage of both the 1980 permit area and those portions of the
actual extended study area to the south are similar as habitat types within both areas coincide.
Wildlife studies were also conducted in 1979 in an area designated for construction of the Tie -Across
Haul Road which would allow SCC to move coal from Routt County Road 53 to the Hayden Power
Station. The original proposed location of the haul road was changed at the request of the CDOW to
avoid disturbing habitat areas utilized by sandhill cranes. •
In 1997, supplemental wildlife studies were conducted in an area immediately south of the original
1980 Seneca II -W Permit Area, designated as the Seneca II -W South Extension area. Wildlife studies
for the II -W South Extension area are presented in Section 11.2.
Habitat Designations
Habitat type designations used for wildlife resource evaluations generally parallel the vegetation
community classifications described in Tab 10. In the early wildlife studies, a separate forb habitat
type was delineated and described. This type is characterized by very limited areal extent and is
interspersed among the Western wheatgrass/alkali sagebrush vegetation community, from which it was
not differentiated during vegetation studies. Because forb habitat was utilized by many wildlife species
during the spring and early summer periods, however, it was sampled separately during the original
wildlife baseline studies.
Revised 9/98
